FAQ
Like your teeth, night guards can accumulate dental plaque that may affect your oral health. We recommend replacing your night guard or retainer at least every six months.
Retainers are designed to help teeth stay in place while night guards are designed to protect teeth from grinding and clenching. ClearClub clear nightguards do both!
Night guards are designed for protecting teeth from grinding and clenching, while mouth guards are used during the day for sports to shield teeth from physical impact.
A night guard is a removable dental appliance designed to protect your teeth from grinding or clenching.
Night guards act as a barrier between your upper and lower teeth, preventing wear from grinding and cushioning the jaw muscles to reduce strain.
Anyone experiencing bruxism, which is grinding or clenching of teeth, or those with TMJ issues, should consider using a night guard.
Symptoms like morning jaw soreness, headaches, tooth sensitivity, or noticeable tooth wear suggest you might benefit from a night guard.
Our night guard protects against grinding and clenching, both when you are awake and asleep, and can help to alleviate jaw pain caused by TMJ.
Custom night guards are designed to fit your bite perfectly, preventing your teeth from shifting and offering protection against grinding and clenching, both while awake and asleep. Many users have reported that these guards help with tongue biting during sleep, though individual results can vary. It's always advisable to consult a dentist for specific concerns related to tongue biting in sleep.
- Protects teeth: Prevents tooth wear and fractures.
- Reduces jaw pain: Alleviates stress on the jaw joints.
- Improves sleep: Limits disruptions caused by clenching.
Like your teeth, night guards can accumulate dental plaque that may affect your oral health so we recommend replacing your night guard frequently (every three, four, or six months).
You should rinse your guard immediately after you wear it and brush it with a soft toothbrush using an anti-microbial soap.
Yes, night guards could be also used during the day. Thinner guards are less invasive (not visible and you can talk while wearing them).
The night guards you can buy in a store are a soft thermoplastic that you fit to your teeth after heating it up in boiling water. They're bulky, cheap, and flimsy and can interfere with your sleep.
A custom night guard is different. These guards fit your teeth exactly because they are made from impressions of your teeth. That means they're thinner and more comfortable than anything you can buy from a store.
OTC custom night guards are made using the same materials and the same process as what you could get from your dentist, just at a fraction of the price. Just like your dentist, OTC custom night guards are made specifically for your teeth, but instead of scheduling multiple appointments to have your impressions taken, you can do it comfortably at home.
Night guards don't cure grinding but effectively prevent dental damage and reduce symptoms associated with bruxism.
Prices vary, but over-the-counter night guards can cost from $25 to $50. Custom-fitted ones from online providers start around $100, while those from a dentist can range from $500 to $1,000, depending on the dentist.
Coverage varies by insurance plan. Some insurers cover custom night guards, considering them preventative dental care.
Yes, children with bruxism may need a night guard, but it's essential to consult with a pediatric dentist for a custom-fitted device suitable for their growing jaws.
Clear Guards: Are made of soft material on the inner and hard material on outer surfaces. Clear guards are offered in three different thicknesses: 1.3mm, 2mm and 3mm.
Color Guards: Are made of soft material on the inner and outer surfaces. Color guards are offered in 2.0 mm thickness.

A night guard should fit snugly against your teeth so that it doesn't move around when you chew. It should also be comfortable enough that you don't feel any discomfort while wearing it.
A night guard is supposed to feel snug to fit securely to stay on your teeth so it does not fall out.
ClearClub night guards prevent your teeth from shifting due to grinding or clenching. If you are looking for post-orthodontic treatment, our 1mm retainer is an effective and affordable solution.
No. Night guards are designed to protect your teeth from grinding and shifting.
A night guard may feel snug, but it needs to fit securely to stay on your teeth without being held in place with assistance from your tongue so it does not fall out.
If stored without proper ventilation or a clean drying surface, the type of bacteria that can grow on your night guard can cause the yellowing, potentially causing more serious oral health conditions over time.
A properly fitted night guard should not change your bite, as it is made to perfectly fit your teeth.
Keep it in a firm case away from heat and direct sunlight to maintain its shape and prevent bacterial growth.
Night guards are not designed for snoring. Specialized devices like mandibular advancement devices are better suited for snoring and sleep apnea.
The choice between an upper or lower night guard depends on personal comfort and if you have a strong gag reflex, a lower guard might be preferable as it is less likely to trigger this reflex.
Wearing both night guards would ensure that both your upper and lower teeth are protected.
Not cleaning your night guard can lead to bacterial buildup, bad odors, and could increase the risk of oral infections.
Yellowing can occur from exposure to saliva and the lack of proper cleaning.
Yes, people with implants can wear night guards. It's important to ensure the guard fits well with the new dental work.
Yes, for some people, wearing a night guard reduces the tension and pain associated with clenching and grinding, which can alleviate related headaches.
Alternatives include stress reduction techniques, biofeedback therapy, and adjusting sleep positions.
Night guards can develop a smell from bacteria and food debris. Proper cleaning with a toothbrush and non-abrasive cleaner usually prevents odors. Additionally, it is recommended to replace the night guard periodically to maintain hygiene and effectiveness.
When used as directed and properly maintained, there are no significant long-term risks associated with using night guards.
By creating a physical barrier between your upper and lower teeth, night guards prevent the wear and tear that comes from grinding, which can lead to chipped or fractured teeth.
While night guards prevent damage from clenching or grinding, they are not designed to correct jaw alignment issues.
A dental retainer is a custom-made device used to keep teeth in place after orthodontic treatment, ensuring they don't shift back to their original positions.
ClearClub retainers are made of hard 1mm material to prevent your teeth from shifting. All of our materials are FDA approved, non-allergenic, latex free, and BPA-free.
Retainers are crucial for maintaining the alignment of your teeth after braces, helping to preserve your new smile and bite alignment.
Initially, you may need to wear your retainer full-time for several months, then transition to wearing it only at night as recommended.
The main types are removable Hawley retainers made of acrylic and wire, clear plastic retainers that resemble aligners, and fixed retainers that are bonded behind the teeth.
Daily cleaning with a soft toothbrush and non-abrasive toothpaste or mild soap helps keep it hygienic. Always use lukewarm water to avoid warping.
Depending on the type, retainers typically range from $100 to $500. Fixed retainers may cost more due to their permanent nature.
Coverage depends on your insurance plan, with some policies including retainers as part of orthodontic care benefits.
The choice depends on factors like the specifics of your dental treatment and personal preference for removable or fixed options.
Yes, retainers can be specially crafted to fit over spaces from missing teeth and can accommodate future dental restorations.
Skipping your retainer can allow teeth to shift, potentially undoing the alignment achieved through orthodontic treatment.
It’s advisable to remove removable retainers during meals to prevent damage and maintain cleanliness, except for permanent retainers which stay in place.
When not in use, store your retainer in a case to protect it and maintain its shape.
Yes, retainers can provide a protective barrier against wear from teeth grinding, similar to night guards.
A broken retainer needs to be replaced to continue providing the necessary support for your teeth.
A retainer may feel tight if not worn regularly; consistent use as recommended will keep the fit comfortable.
Regular wear will help you adjust quickly; it typically takes a few days to feel natural.
There may be a brief adjustment period where speech is slightly affected, but this usually resolves quickly as you get used to the retainer.
Unlike braces that move teeth, clear plastic retainers are used post-treatment to maintain tooth positions.
Retainers can develop odors from bacteria buildup if not cleaned regularly. Proper hygiene prevents smells.
Retainers are typically made from acrylic for the base and may include metal wires or be entirely of clear plastic.
A properly fitting retainer should feel secure without causing pain or significant discomfort.
Depending on your orthodontic treatment, you might need retainers for both to ensure complete stability.
Avoid leaving your retainer in extreme temperatures, using harsh cleaners, or skipping nightly wear to maintain its effectiveness and longevity.
By keeping teeth aligned, retainers may help minimize the risk of related dental problems like uneven wear or TMJ issues.
A mouth guard is a protective device worn in the mouth to shield the teeth and gums from injury during sports.
Wearing a mouth guard helps protect against dental injuries like cracked teeth, cut lips, and other trauma that can occur during physical activities.
Select a mouth guard based on the sport you play and its specific risks. For heavy contact sports, a thicker, more protective guard is ideal.
There are three main types: stock (pre-formed), boil-and-bite (customizable fit), and custom-made (professionally fitted).
Clean your mouth guard after each use with cool water and soap, brush with a toothbrush, and store it dry to prevent bacterial growth.
Replace your mouth guard at least once a season or sooner if it becomes deformed or develops rough edges that could irritate your mouth.
While a mouth guard protects against dental injuries, there is no conclusive evidence that it prevents concussions.
Initially, mouth guards might feel bulky or uncomfortable, but a properly fitted guard should become comfortable with regular use.
Prices vary by type: stock mouth guards cost as little as $15, boil-and-bite mouth guards around $25-$50, and custom mouth guards can cost $100-$500.
It's advisable to wear a mouth guard for any sport that involves the risk of impact to the face, including some non-contact sports.
Mouth guards cushion blows to the face, minimizing the risk of broken teeth and injuries to the lips, tongue, face, or jaw.
Store your mouth guard in a sturdy container to keep it clean, and protected from damage.
Yes, children should wear mouth guards during sports to protect their developing teeth and jaws from potential injuries.
Good quality, well-fitted mouth guards should not significantly impact breathing or speaking.
With proper care, a mouth guard should last through a season of sports, but check regularly for wear and replace as needed.
A properly fitted mouth guard should be snug against your teeth without causing any discomfort or requiring constant clenching to hold in place.
Most people only need to wear a mouth guard on their upper teeth, but your dentist or sports coach may recommend dual protection in some cases.
Yes, but it's essential to get a custom-fitted mouth guard to ensure it provides adequate support and protection.
Sports mouth guards are thicker for impact protection, while night guards are designed to prevent teeth grinding and are generally lighter.
Look for tears, holes, or areas where the mouth guard has become thin. These signs indicate it's time for a replacement.
A well-fitted mouth guard should not interfere with your sports performance and can actually help you play better by reducing fear of injury.
You should not experience any mouth injuries while using the guard, and it should fit comfortably without shifting during use.
Yes, mouth guards can be customized in thickness and design based on the level of risk associated with different sports.
Gradual use during practice sessions can help you adjust to the feel of the mouth guard, increasing comfort over time.
Ensure it fits correctly, covers all your teeth, and stays securely in place during activities; consider a custom-fit model for the best protection.
A teeth whitening kit is a set of products including whitening gel, applicators, and sometimes a light device, designed to brighten teeth by removing stains.
These kits typically use bleaching agents like hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide to break down stains on the enamel, resulting in whiter teeth.
A custom teeth whitening kit includes personalized trays molded to fit the unique contours of your teeth, paired with a professional-strength whitening gel for effective home treatment.
Custom kits offer a precise fit, ensuring even gel distribution, better contact with the teeth, and more effective and consistent whitening results compared to one-size-fits-all kits.
After taking an impression of your teeth, either at home with a kit or at a dentist's office, the trays are crafted to match your teeth's exact shape, ensuring optimal fit and effectiveness.
The snug fit of custom trays keeps the whitening gel in close contact with every surface of each tooth, minimizing leakage and maximizing whitening coverage and effectiveness.
Yes, when used as directed, custom kits are safe. The trays limit gel contact with gums and soft tissues, reducing irritation and increasing safety.
Results can often be seen within a few days, with full results typically apparent after two weeks of consistent use.
While some sensitivity might occur due to the bleaching agents, the custom fit of the trays helps minimize gel spillage and reduce gum irritation and sensitivity.
Rinse trays with cold water after each use, and clean gently with a soft brush and mild soap. Avoid hot water, which can warp the trays.
Yes, since they are made to fit your teeth precisely, custom trays are typically more comfortable than generic trays or strips.
While primarily for cosmetic purposes, using custom trays can help motivate individuals to maintain better overall oral hygiene.
It is not recommended to eat or drink while wearing whitening trays to avoid dislodging the gel and compromising the treatment.
Keep the trays in a dry, cool place out of direct sunlight, ideally in a case that allows air circulation to prevent bacterial growth.
Custom kits are suitable for most adults seeking cosmetic dental improvements. Consult with a dentist if you have significant dental restorations or sensitivity.
While effective, custom trays may not change the color of dental restorations such as crowns or veneers and may miss areas near the gum line if not fitted correctly.
The results can last for one to two years, depending on your habits such as smoking, and consumption of staining foods and drinks.
At-home custom whitening trays can be nearly as effective as in-office treatments over time, offering the convenience of home use with professional results.
Avoid overfilling the trays to prevent gel spillage, and ensure not to use the gel more frequently than recommended to avoid sensitivity.
Custom trays cover more surface area of each tooth and provide a more consistent and controlled application than over-the-counter strips.
Apply a small bead of gel along the front inner surface of the tray for each tooth, avoiding over-application to prevent spillage.
Using a toothpaste for sensitive teeth during the whitening process can help manage and reduce sensitivity.
Clean the whitening trays with a soft brush and non-abrasive toothpaste
You should notice your teeth becoming progressively whiter after several applications, with full results typically visible after one or two weeks.
